An Evening of WW2 Music

The movie night program will not be a movie at all.  We plan an evening of WW2 music for your enjoyment

19-Sep-2012 Das Boot  Part II (final 1.5 hours)

The Battle of The Atlantic, the longest continuous engagement of the war, would ultimately determine the success or failure of the Allies in Europe.  By 1942, the tide was turning in favor of the Allies.  Allied losses were still large, but improved ships, methods and technology and the US entrance into the war was beginning to show and German U-Boats have begun to take heavy losses. "Das Boot" (The Boat), one of the best movies about WWII and the best submarine film ever, is the story of one such U-Boat crew, with the film examining how these submariners maintained their professionalism as soldiers, attempted to accomplish impossible missions, while all the time attempting to understand and obey the ideology of the government under which they served.

The Gathering Storm

Albert Finney and Vanessa Redgrave star is this film about Churchill and England in the mid 1930s.  A backbench MP and a virtual outcast in English politics, Churchill alone sees the looming danger of Hitler and a rearming Germany.  He is cast as a warmonger and often shouted down by members of both parties.  But he does have a core group of associates who believe in him and his insights.  The most important is his wife, Clementine.

Warm Springs

Kenneth Branagh and Cynthia Nixon star is this look at Franklin D. Roosevelt's pre-presidency days, from his being diagnosed with polio one year after his unsuccessful bid for the White House as presidential nominee James Cox's running mate, through his rehabilitation in Warm Springs, Ga., to his nomination of Al Smith for Democratic Presidential candidate in 1928.  Cynthia Nixon, as Eleanor Roosevelt, is terrific

Downfall

In this award winning 2004 film, Traudl Junge, the final secretary for Adolf Hitler, tells of the Nazi dictator's final days in his Berlin bunker at the end of WWII.  This is a film not many have seen but one you will not soon forget.  Bruno Ganz's portrayal of Hitler is exceptional.

Letters From Iwo Jima

Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai) stars in this Clint Eastwood directed, Oscar winning 2006 film about the Battle of Iwo Jima as seen from the Japanese side.

Sahara

Humphrey Bogart, Lloyd Bridges and Dan Duryea star in this Oscar nominated 1943 film about action in the Western Desert Campaign (North Africa).  Sergeant Joe Gunn (Bogart) leads an abandoned tank unit retreating from Rommel's Afrika Korps after the fall of Tobruk in North Africa. The tanks picks up British, French, South African, and Sudanese soldiers along the way, becoming a microcosm of the Allied troops. The group works together to defeat a much larger German force that wants the same water well that the Allies have occupied.

Command Decision

Clark Gable, Walter Pidgeon and Van Johnson star in this 1948 film about the stress of command.  US Army Air Forces generals struggle with the decision to prioritize bombing the German factories producing new jet fighters over the extremely high casualties the mission will cost.

Although this film explores some of the same issues as the 1949 film classic 12 o'clock High, it easily stands alone as an excellent WW2 Air War film.

The Longest Day

John Wayne, Eddie Albert, Richard Burton, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum and many others you will recognize star in this 1962 oscar-winning dramatization of D-Day.  The film tells the story of the D-Day invasion of Normandy in WWII with good detail and accuracy (not perfect but quite good). There are dozens of characters, some seen only briefly, who together weave the story of five separate invasion points that made up the operation as seen from both the Allied and German points of view.
