Paris 1919   This award winning film expertly blends re-enactments with archival footage to transport you to one of the most important summit meetings of the 20th Century.  The film chronicles an extraordinary event that dissolved empires, redrew maps, engineered the Treaty of Versailles, and created far-reaching consequences that led directly to WWII and continue to afflict and trouble our world today.

18-Nov-2015 Good Night and Good Luck

Edward R Murrow, the voice of London during WWII and the father of broadcast journalism, takes a stand against Joe McCarthy.  An excellent film with a terrific performance by David Strathairn as Murrow

21-Oct-2015 Tea With Mussolini

Florance, 1935  The love affair between the artistically-inclined English community and Florence was soon to be overshadowed by the clouds of war.  But at the moment the sun is still shining on the squares and statues, and the dictator Mussolini is the gentleman who makes the trains run on time.

Something a little different ... A nicely presented film with typically excellent performances by Maggie Smith and Judi Dench.  Based on the autobiography of the film's director.

16-Sep-2015 Casablanca

One of the best films of all time (on everyone's top 10 list); a film you can see again and again and never tire of it.  Lots more ...

Hiroshima depicts the period from April 1945 to August 1945 when Harry S Truman must come to grips with the Atomic bomb and its potential implications.  Truman, the successor to the Oval Office after the late President Roosevelt died suddenly, is plagued with decisions (for which he has little preparation) that could save or cost tens of thousands of lives.   He is briefed on the nuclear weapons project -- which he approves -- and then must decide if it should be used.  Although we know how it will end, the film builds excellent tension.

This film was a joint Canadian-Japanese effort with careful attention to details, and actors who actually look like the people they portray.  The blending of contemporary and historic film footage is excellent.

Operation Market Garden was Montgomery's (Sep 1944) plan for a narrow thrust through Holland into Germany and a rapid end to the war in Europe.  This 1977 docudrama is a well acted and reasonably accurate telling of this failed operation   The cast of characters is typical of many "war epics" including Sean Connery, Ryan ONeal, Dirk Bogard, Gene Hackman, Jeremy Kemp, Edward Fox, Michael Caine, Anthonly Hopkins, James Caan, Liv ullmann, Elliott Gould, Ben Cross, Denholm Elliott, Lawrence Oliver, Robert Redford, and John Ratzenberger; plus archive footage featuring a host of axis and allied commanders.
