Best Years of Our Lives  This award winning film starring Myrna Loy, Fredric March, Dana Andrews, and Virginia Mayo focuses on the social re-adjustment of three returning WWII servicemen, each from a different place in society. One returns to an influential banking position, but finds it hard to reconcile his loyalties to ex-servicemen with new commercial realities. Another is an ordinary working man who finds it difficult to hold down a job or pick up the threads of his marriage.  The third, having had both hands burnt off during the war, is unsure that his fiancée's feelings are still those of love and not those of pity. Each of the veterans faces a crisis upon his arrival, and each crisis is an example of varied experiences of many American warriors who found an alien world awaiting them when they came marching home.

Battle of the Bulge       The Germans referred to it officially as Unternehmen Wacht am Rhein ("Operation Watch on the Rhine") or usually Ardennenoffensive or Rundstedt-Offensive; the French called it the Bataille des Ardennes ("Battle of the Ardennes"); the Allies officially called it the Ardennes Counteroffensive. We know it as the "Battle of the Bulge"; the name was coined by contemporary press to describe the way the Allied front line bulged inward on wartime news maps and became the most widely used name for the battle.

This film is a dramatization this last major German offensiveof World War II; the German objective was to split the Allies then encircle and destroy the British and Americans separately and retake Antwerp.  The film is presented as viewed by an American intelligence officer and by a German Panzer commander.  As with many "war epics" films in the 1960s, the cast is impressive including Henry Fonda, Robert Shaw, Robert Ryan, Dana Andrews, George Montgomery, Charles Bronson and Telly Savales.  The narrator is William Conrad-- the voice of Gunsmoke on the radio.

This is not a great war film and only loosely aligns with the facts.  But if you focus on the amazing line-up of actors, special effects, soundtrack, and battle sequences, it becomes a interesting and entertaining World War II movie.

Hiroshima depicts the period from April 1945 to August 1945 when Harry S Truman must come to grips with the Atomic bomb and its potential implications.  Truman, the successor to the Oval Office after the late President Roosevelt died suddenly, is plagued with decisions (for which he has little preparation) that could save or cost tens of thousands of lives.   He is briefed on the nuclear weapons project -- which he approves -- and then must decide if it should be used.  Although we know how it will end, the film builds excellent tension.

This film was a joint Canadian-Japanese effort with careful attention to details, and actors who actually look like the people they portray.  The blending of contemporary and historic film footage is excellent.

In this award winning 2004 film, Traudl Junge, the final secretary for Adolf Hitler, tells of the Nazi dictator's final days in his Berlin bunker at the end of WWII.  This is a film not many have seen but one you will not soon forget.  Bruno Ganz's portrayal of Hitler is exceptional.

Run Silent, Run Deep

Clark Gable, Burt Lancaster and Jack Warden star in this highly regarded 1958 film about submarine warfare.  The captain of a submarine sunk by the Japanese during WWII is finally given a chance to skipper another sub after a year of working a desk job. His single minded determination for revenge against the destroyer that sunk his previous vessel puts his new crew in unnecessary danger.  Watch for Don Rickles in one of his first film appearances as Quartermaster Ruby.

Is Paris Burning?

This 1966 film, starring a long list of well-know actors including Jean-Paul Belmondo, Charles Boyer, Leslie Caron, George Chakiris, Alan Delon, Kirk Douglas, Glenn Ford, Kurt Fröbe, Orson Welles and many others you will recognize, was nominated for two Oscars.  The story depicts the struggles of various French resistance factions to regain control of Paris in the summer of 1944. The Nazi general in charge of Paris, Dietrich von Cholitz (Fröbe), is under orders from Hitler himself to burn the city if he cannot control it or if the Allies get too close. Much of the drama centers around the moral deliberations of the general, the Swedish ambassador (Welles), and the eager but desperate leaders of the resistance.

17-Aug-2016 For Whom The Bell Tolls

Gary Cooper (fresh from his starring roles as Lou Gehrig in Pride of the Yankees and Sgt York) and Ingrid Bergman (fresh from her starring role in Casablanca) star in this Ernest Hemingway story of an American allied with the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War who finds romance during a desperate mission to blow up a strategically important bridge.  Both Cooper and Bergman were nominated for Oscars

21-Sep-2016 Japanese Movie - Rengo Kantai Shirei Chokan Yamamoto Isoroku Taiheiyo Senso 70 Nen Me No Shinjitsu [Japan DVD] BCBJ-4260Admiral Yamamoto

This is one of those films that most people have not seen and you are unlikely to see anywhere except through the WWII History Club.  The film presents Yamamoto as the complete person, not just the commander of the Japanese Combined Fleet.

19-Oct-2016 Woman in Gold

Based on real events, Helen Mirren stars as Maria Altmann, an octogenarian Jewish refugee, who takes on the Austrian government to recover artwork she believes rightfully belongs to her family.  Another outstanding performance by Helen Mirren

16-Nov-2016 December 7th

This is the 1943 John Ford movie (docudrama) that is so bad, it is good.

21-Dec-2016 Black Book

This 2006 Dutch film about the Dutch resistance during WWII follows a Jewish singer who infiltrates the regional Gestapo headquarters.   This is an excellent film that few have seen.
