Our December meeting will be moved from 25-Dec-2013 (Wednesday) to 23-Dec-2013 (Monday).  The Wednesday is Christmas Day and Colony Cottage Rec Center will be closed.  No change in time, i.e., still 3PM to 5PM.  We will likely be in the other double room (10 feet from where we normally meet)

Our annual WWII Music Night will be moved to early in 2014 and will be held at the new Eisenhower Recreation Center.  This is a one time change in venue; normal Movie Nights will continue to be held at Seabreeze.   The WWII Book Club and Movie Night will be on October's topic -- The Battle of Britain.

Hiroshima depicts the period from April 1945 to August 1945 when Harry S Truman must come to grips with the Atomic bomb and its potential implications.  Truman, the successor to the Oval Office after the late President Roosevelt died suddenly, is plagued with decisions (for which he has little preparation) that could save or cost tens of thousands of lives.   He is briefed on the nuclear weapons project -- which he approves -- and then must decide if it should be used.  Although we know how it will end, the film builds excellent tension.

This film was a joint Canadian-Japanese effort with careful attention to details, and actors who actually look like the people they portray.  The blending of contemporary and historic film footage is excellent.

Judgment at Nuremberg depicts the moral and emotional struggles as a judge tries to balance justice and what is right.  It has been three years since the most important Nazi leaders had already been tried. On trial are four jurists who are accused of "legalizing" Nazi racial policies used their offices to conduct Nazi sterilization and cleansing policies.   Starring Spencer Tracey as retired American judge, Dan Haywood, who has a daunting task ahead of him. The Cold War is heating up and no one wants any more trials as Germany, and Allied governments, want to forget the past. But is that the right thing to do is the question that the tribunal must decide.  Also starring Burt Lancaster, Richard Widmark, Marlene Dietrich, Maximilian Schnell, Judy Garland and Montgomery Clift.

Ike: Countdown to D-Day (2004) PosterIke:  Countdown to D-Day depicts the tense 90 days leading up to the D-Day invasion and how Dwight Eisenhower, against all odds, brilliantly orchestrated the most important military maneuver in modern history.

Starring Tom Selleck as Eisenhower (very credible performance) the film recounts many of the trials and tribulation Ike had to face, not the least of which were the many prima donnas surrounding him (Patton, Montgomery and especially de Gaulle) and the need for tact and diplomacy to bring all sides together for what would be the largest amphibious assault ever attempted.

The Man Who Never Was (1956) PosterThe Man Who Never Was is a dramatization of Operation Mincemeat, the Allied operation designed to convince the Germans that Sicily (Operation Husky) was not the next Allied objective after North Africa.

Starring Clifton Webb and Gloria Graham, the film is based on the book of the same name written by Lt Commander Ewen Montagu.  The carefully orchestrated operation positions the body of Major William Martin, a Royal Marine, manacled to a briefcase with operational secrets off the coast of Spain and lets the Spanish and Germans come to logical conclusions.  The actual identity of the body has been the subject of much debate over the years and only recently has been definitively identified (or so the author of  Deathly Deception would like us to believe)
